Fighting for ADHD Care in Scotland: Why We Can't Wait Any Longer

Navigating ADHD care in Scotland has been a frustrating and, at times, heartbreaking journey—for me, my family, and many of the clients I support. Our own experience here in West Dunbartonshire reflects a much wider crisis that’s impacting individuals and families across the country.

As an ADHD Coach, and NHS professional, and parent of two neurodivergent children, I’ve witnessed firsthand how broken the current system is. Crippling waiting lists that leave people in limbo for years. GPs refusing to accept shared care agreements. Schools lacking the training or resources to properly support neurodivergent pupils. And workplaces that not only fail to accommodate ADHDers—but sometimes actively discriminate against us. I know this, because I’ve lived it.

I recently reached out to my MSP, Jackie Baillie, outlining these concerns in detail. I shared not just my professional insight, but our family’s lived experience—because this isn’t just about statistics or funding models. It’s about real people, real suffering, and a system that’s failing the very people it’s supposed to help. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to receive a response.

So I’ve taken our fight further—writing directly to Neil Gray MSP, the Cabinet Secretary for Health. In my letter, I called out the postcode lottery in ADHD diagnosis and care, the systemic delays and gatekeeping, and the urgent need for training, accountability, and inclusion across all sectors—especially education and health.

This is not just an ADHD issue. It’s a human rights issue. Access to healthcare, support in education, and dignity in the workplace are not luxuries—they're basic rights that neurodivergent people in Scotland are being denied every day.

If you’re facing similar struggles, please know: you’re not alone. There are many of us pushing for change, sharing our stories, and holding decision-makers to account. I see you, I stand with you, and I won’t stop speaking up until every person with ADHD in Scotland gets the care and respect they deserve.

Let’s keep raising our voices. Let’s make them listen.
